We at CUNA Mutual are looking for a skilled Specialty Account Underwriter.

This is an advanced level underwriting position reporting directly to the Specialty Risk Group Director. The Specialty Account Underwriter is responsible for assessing the exposures and recommending appropriate Credit Union Protection insurance products as well as identifying loss prevention solutions for CUNA Mutual Group’s largest and most complex credit unions and related organizations in a highly competitive environment. This position will also be accountable for driving internal Customer Development Process participation, and collaborating with senior management, field, claims, brokerage and loss prevention to bring all appropriate services and products to the assigned accounts.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Evaluation of credit union and related organizations exposures for all lines of insurance. Assess the potential for insured loss by evaluating their strategic and tactical plans, operations, policies, procedures, regulatory examinations, financial conditions, loss histories, renewal questionnaires, risk management reports and discussions with credit union staff at the highest levels. The underwriter will evaluate and determine the terms and conditions which are appropriate for the risk and will work with CMG’s internal sales team to communicate the proposal to the credit union and related organizations. The underwriter will offer an insurance program in compliance with CUNA Mutual’s underwriting guidelines. The underwriter will collaborate closely with the Sales, Risk Management, Claims, and Product in building the relationships with these credit unions. Proactively engage the credit union in conjunction with Sales and provide consultation services. This may occur as part of the mid year review and/or the renewal process. Actively engage internal risk experts and other solution groups as needed.
  • Travel to assigned accounts as part of the account team. Participate in mid year executive reviews, renewal presentations and on site risk management analyses. Participate in field planning meetings by the field with assigned accounts. Conduct seminars and presentations on insurance coverage, loss to credit unions, credit union related organizations, and other departments within CUNA Mutual Group.
  • Work to resolve problems (pricing/coverage) as presented by the Field Marketing Divisions. Develop background on the concerns as presented and make decisions to reach resolution to the satisfaction of the credit unions as well as in the best interest of CUNA Mutual Group.
  • Provide mentoring, consulting and answer any questions that may be received from the other underwriters.
  • Bring the underwriter's perspective to projects and teams for the benefit of CUNA Mutual Group and customers.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Insurance, Business or equivalent trade off in related professional work experience. Advance degree is desirable.
  • Professional designation such as CPCU, AFSB, UND.
  • Extensive understanding of fidelity, property and casualty insurance and credit union internal operations. This could be expertise related to the underwriting or marketing of the division's coverage, adjudication of the division's claims, technical expertise about credit union operations and the financial analysis of credit unions. Must have an understanding of theory and principles related to commercial property and casualty insurance.
  • Expert level knowledge regarding credit union operations and their influence on exposure to insured losses. Minimum of 7 -10 years of progressively responsible experience is required, preferably with field experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, analytical, planning, interpersonal including communication, creative problem solving skills, presentation and project management skills.
  • Willingness to travel 25% of time.
