POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Summer Youth Day Camp Counselor

LOCATION/DEPT: Rockford Tabernacle

REPORTS TO: Corps Officer

FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt

OUTCOMES

It is a goal of The Salvation Army to employ a highly motivated person to facilitate programs for youth in our community. This is a ministry position responsible for developing, monitoring, and managing all youth programs including The Salvation Army's EMPOWER After School Program, a holistic youth development program for elementary and middle school students. The program will intentionally focus on relationship building as the 'active ingredient' in programming, services, and activities.

Under direction of the Youth Program Administrator and Youth Program Coordinator, this position is responsible for the daily operation of the EMPOWER After School Program. This may include, but is not limited to leading, facilitating, and monitoring a variety of activities. EMPOWER will serve elementary and middle school students with a capacity to serve up to 75 students daily.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for the care and well-being of program participants.
  2. Directs a variety of educational, recreational, relational, and development activities, including mentoring and tutoring programs attendees.
  3. Monitors activities to ensure compliance with established activity plans and grant requirements as well as The Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  4. Foster and model relationship building in 5 key areas; Express Care, Challenge Growth, Provide Support, Share Power, and Expand Possibilities
  5. Assist with the implementation of program schedules and activities.
  6. Assist Youth Program Director and Youth Program Coordinator in obtaining statistical information.
  7. Attend training for and utilize The Search Institute 40 Developmental Assets model. Knowledge of the Search Institute and Bridges Out of Poverty R Rules materials and website resources.
  8. Attend and participate in staff meetings when required.
  9. Maintain confidentiality, proper client and staff boundaries. Comply with The Salvation Army Safe From Harm guidelines.
  10. Maintain a positive, professional work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters relationship building.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Trained in Search Institute Developmental Assets model, and The Salvation Army Safe from Harm Safety and Abuse Prevention Program.
  2. Ensures that Safe from Harmguidelines are instituted and followed in the local setting.
  3. CPR/First Aid/AED certification preferred, or within 30 days of hire.
  4. Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with program participants, their families, officers, co-workers, donors, volunteers, and supervisors. Serve as a positive role model for youth in the community.
  5. All other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Youth Program Administrator and the Youth Program Coordinator.

Oversee the safety and wellbeing of participating youth keeping them safe, directed, informed and on task.

In contacts related to this position's duties, this individual acts as a representative of the Army and its mission.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of the position are achieved as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with youth programming and interest in child/youth development studies, education counseling, and/or recreational programming preferred.
  • Capable of meeting the demands of the After School program both physically and mentally.

COMPENTENCIES

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to work with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of positivity and consistency
  • Relate to people of all ages and demonstrate a sensitivity to individual needs.
  • Ability to oversee program participants of varying educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to address and adapt to situations involving security or in a time of crisis.
  • Willing to promote the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities and meet critical deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, reliable, dependable, and organized.
  • Ability to speak, read and write English in a manner that is sufficient for consultation with supervisors, employees, parents, and youth; and to perform the requirements of this job.

POSITION LIMITATIONS

  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Program Administrator and Program Coordinator informed on all critical issues relating to his/her area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all Army policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Capable of performing the above essential duties including participation in recreational programing.
  • May require walking tours of communities/neighborhoods, outdoor work in programs or community garden, and visitation in under resourced neighborhoods.
  • Office work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Must be able to move or lift at least 25lbs.
  • The work environment includes an office environment, as well as classrooms, outdoor spaces, and gym/recreational spaces with a low to high noise level.
  • There will be times the individual is frequently in and out of vehicles.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment and a PC.
