Job Summary:

Would you like to work at Wisconsin's public health laboratory protecting the public from radiological hazards? The radiochemistry unit at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) is looking for a chemist to join our team! This chemist will be responsible for analyzing a variety of samples: water, soil, vegetation, milk, using different analytical methods to determine the radioactivity of the sample. This may include radioactivity analysis for: gross alpha and beta, radium, uranium, tritium, radon as well as other radionuclides. In addition, this position will be accountable for managing quality assurance tasks associated with the radiochemistry unit; this would include duties such as tracking standard operating procedure reviews, proficiency test results, facilitating internal audits and monitoring quality control metrics. After a year of employment at WSLH, the chemist may also have the opportunity to apply for a graduate certificate program in radiochemistry paid for by a national association (if selected to participate).

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or closely related degree (i.e., chemical engineer, radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry or similar).

Qualifications:

Chem I: College-level chemistry laboratory course work required. Analytical laboratory experience preferred.

Chem II: College-level chemistry laboratory course work and two - three years analytical laboratory experience required. 5+ years analytical laboratory experience preferred.

Previous experience working in an environmental/radiochemistry laboratory setting is highly desired. Preference will be given to those with chemistry lab experience.

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
Chemist I: $50,000/year minimum
Chemist II: $58,000/year minimum

Address your willingness to complete a potential fully funded, one-year certificate program in radiochemistry. Please detail all types of lab experience you have. Explain the extent of your knowledge about the principles of chemistry and in particular radiochemistry. CV must also be submitted with letter of interest.

Note, the certificate program will include two separate weeks of in-person hands-on training (out-of-state) in radiochemistry principles and analysis. The chemist in this position would likely be asked to apply in spring of 2025 and attend in-person segments in summer or fall of 2025-2026 if accepted.
